Pontiac was a car brand owned, made, and sold by General Motors. Introduced as a companion make for GM's more expensive line of Oakland automobiles, Pontiac overtook Oakland in popularity and supplanted its parent brand entirely by Amid late s financial problems and restructuring efforts, GM announced in it would follow the same path with Pontiac as it had with Oldsmobile in and discontinued manufacturing and marketing vehicles under that brand by the end of The last Pontiac badged cars were built in Decemberwith one final vehicle in January Purchased by General Motors inOakland continued to produce modestly priced automobiles until when it was renamed Pontiac.
It was named after the famous Ottawa chief who had also given his name to the city of Pontiac, Michigan where the car was produced. As a result of Pontiac's rising sales, versus Oakland's declining sales, Pontiac became the only companion marque to survive its parent, with Oakland ceasing production in Pontiacs were also manufactured from knock-down kits at GM's short-lived Japanese factory at Osaka Assembly in Osaka, Japanfrom — The next year, it became the top-selling six in the U. This was done by using many components from the 6-cylinder Chevrolet Mastersuch as the body, but installing a large chrome strip on the top and center of the front hood Pontiac called the "Silver Streak".
Only eight cylinder engines were offered in anddisplacing In the late s, Pontiac used a Buick "torpedo" body for one of its models, just prior to its being used by Chevrolet, earning some media attention for the marque.
An unusual feature of the "torpedo"-bodied exhibition car was that, with push of a button, the front half of the body would open showing the engine and the car's front seat interior. New stronger X frame had Hotchkiss drive using a two part drive shaft. The "C" body for was called the Torpedo.
In all Pontiac's were called Torpedoes. On February 2,the last civilian Pontiac automobile was manufactured in the United States, as all automobile factories converted to military production. For an extended period of time—prewar through the early s—the Pontiac was a quiet, solid car, but not especially powerful. It came with a flathead straight eight. Straight 8s were slightly less expensive to produce than the increasingly popular V8s, but they were also heavier and longer. Additionally, the long crankshaft suffered from excessive flex, restricting straight 8s to a relatively low compression ratio with a modest redline.
However, in this application, inexpensive yet very quiet flatheads were not a liability.
From toall Pontiac models were essentially models with minor changes. The Hydra-matic automatic transmission was introduced in and helped Pontiac sales grow even though their cars, Torpedoes and Streamliners, were quickly becoming out of date.
The first all-new Pontiac models appeared in They incorporated styling cues such as lower body lines and rear fenders that were integrated in the rear-end styling of the car. Along with new styling came a new model. Continuing the Native American theme of Pontiac, the Chieftain line was introduced to replace the Torpedo.
These were built on the GM B-Body platform and featured different styling than the more conservative Streamliner. In Automotive News. When it comes to muscle cars, I have always been a GM guy. I spent the better part of my teens and early twenties driving a El Camino, a wreck with a distracted soccer mom in a minivan destroyed my Camaro RS, and I own a TPI 5-speed Firebird Formula that could use a valve job much sooner than later.
Hence, I, like many muscle car enthusiasts, could not have been more disappointed in the fourth generation GTOs, which in case you forgot, and you probably did were sold from to The GTO was available with a six-speed manual transmission in all three years.
After selling only 13, of 15, cars inin Pontiac added the LS2 together with standard hood scoops and split rear exhaust. Reviews of the fourth-gen GTO were mixed.
With the end of the Firebird inthe GTO was the last muscle car the automaker ever produced. The worst part is that, despite its awful aesthetics and Australian origins, with its Corvette C6 powertrain the GTO easily outperformed and outperforms its neo-muscle competitors—the Charger, the Mustang, the Camaro, and even the Challenger. The good news, then, is that an incredibly fast GTO with low miles is easily attainable and relatively affordable. Categories : Automotive News. I have been wrecking cars for as long as I've been driving them but I keep coming back for more.
Two wheels or four, I'm all in. He would have been better off with driving a G8. It is what it is, as far as Pontiac and how they met their bitter end. Proud owner of a GTO, and have yet to even remotely regret it since I drove it off the showroom floor.
Again I agree, seemed to be the car some in the press loved to critize, pontiac made so many overstyled cars after the gto it was refreshing to see this generation of understated style like the earlier gto.
The millennial generation rewrites history.
We need to get used to correcting them. I followed The Beatles from before the Sullivan Show and into the after years. Never knew they broke up when the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor. Eh, far from the best bang for your buck. There, in the center of the dash, where you'd expect to find a member of the Delco family settled into its customary reserved seat, your eyes fall on the word "Blaupunkt.
And it's only the first of the GTO's many surprises. Anyway, you may recall that it was two score years ago that Pontiacwith a pre-DeLorean John DeLorean calling the shots, plopped a hulking Bonneville V-8 engine into a compact Tempest body to create the original GTO well, okay, the name actually first appeared on a vehicle from a faraway carmaker that rhymes with "Pherrari," but let's not let that get in the way of a good story.
The GTO's Schwarzenegger-engine-in-a- Hugh-Grant-body formula was an instant hit and, for the rest of the s, an ever-more socially irresponsible breed of so-called musclecars painted America's streets with the ribbonlike remnants of their tortured rear tires. When word leaked out that Pontiac--now under the stewardship of another octane-loving visionary, GM Chairman Bob Lutz--would be unveiling an all-new GTO, some 30 years after the retirement of the original, the regulars around the MT water cooler immediately weighed in with predictions.
Surprise 2: The new GTO looks nothing like a jukebox on wheels. True, the Yellow Jacket paint scheme on our test car was bright enough to give George Hamilton a sunburn, but the bodywork is as clean and sleek as a modern Euro coupe's. This may not be the most memorable shape behind today's showroom glass, but we applaud Pontiac's decision to skip the bolt-on body cladding and the shaving-mirror chrome wheels--indeed, the body is entirely free of "I'm a musclecar" costume.
Even the small rear wing looks appropriate, lending just the right sporty finish to the tail. In fact, the GTO is so tastefully subdued, it'll surely disappoint those expecting the Vin Diesel treatment. Yet the muscle is there for those who appreciate subtlety.
Check out the ride height, for instance. When have you seen a factory General Motors product so rakishly low to the ground--or sporting such narrow tire-to-body gaps? Part of the explanation, of course, is that the GTO is no ordinary Pontiac. The car is based on the Monaro, a popular and athletic rear-drive coupe built by GM subsidiary Holden in Australia. Surprise 3: The cabin has the sporty elegance of a BMW 's.
Four large analog gauges wearing faces color-coordinated with the exterior paint lie in a large pod behind the wheel; the dials and much of the interior are trimmed with a classy satin-nickel finish as are the drilled pedals.
The four-spoke steering wheel with integrated audio controls feels good in your hands and is infinitely adjustable for tilt and telescope--something we've been nagging GM to do for years. The center stack houses straightforward climate controls and that Blaupunkt audio system--a watt, speaker affair with in-dash six-disc CD changer.
There's not a blob of bling-bling marring the cool, businesslike ambiance. Surprise 4: Fit and finish are the finest we've seen on a GM vehicle in decades. The body emits not a squeak and shimmies not a whit, parts gaps are tight and uniform even on our preproduction pilot vehiclethe interior shapes flow smoothly into one another, and the materials are rich and handsome. Superb, beautifully stitched leather covers the wheel, the shift boot, and the seats. It's got the power and the performance to wear the GTO name, but uninspired styling and an expensive price make the Pontiac GTO less likely to become a cult hit like its predecessor.
Available styles include 2dr Coupe 5. Doing so could save you hundreds or thousands of dollars. Edmunds also provides consumer-driven dealership sales and service reviews to help you make informed decisions about what cars to buy and where to buy them.
