Over that time it's evolved into a do-it-all connection, acting as a medium for various video and audio formats. But what's the point of it? And where does the new eARC protocol fit in this picture? Read on for all the info you need and more HDMI launched way back inand the first consumer kit to feature this high-tech connector hit the shops in It was introduced as part of HDMI version 1. Picture the scene. Previously, you would have to connect an optical cable from the back of your TV to an optical input on your audio device.

But more on that later. Worried about potential lip-sync problems? HDMI v1. This means some ARC-enabled products will play together nicely, others might not. The biggest problem for ARC in its current guise is manufacturers have been left to pick and choose which elements of the protocol they want to include.

Some TV manufacturers only support Dolby Digital while others only support two channel stereo, which completely defeats the point. It simply strips out the core 5. The main benefit of eARC is a big boost in bandwidth and speed. This allows you to send higher-quality audio from your TV to a soundbar or AV receiver. This means they need to meet the HDMI 2. Other products with eARC, however, are starting to emerge slowly.

All firmware updates are available now. According to HDMI. So no, it's not backwards-compatible. It depends if they are using compatible hardware that can accept the necessary firmware update.

More importantly, their support in South Africa has been absolutely top notch for me.

Samsung claiming that the world will be digital is pure B. When that happens I, as many others, will walk away from the content and boycott it. If physical media can not coexist then the content will die. Perhaps Samsung does not understand the reality of what eARC is.

Without eARC, gamers buying the Samsungs for their "gaming" features are litteraly shafted into choosing either their high end multichannel surround system or variable refresh rates and resolutions.

Why must Samsung put this burdon on consumers? Either the TV supports these features all together or don't bother at all because many can not take advante of them anyways. No one buys an overpriced TV with exclusive gaming features just to stream Netflix, come on are you for real?

Get with it Samsung.

We appreciate your dilligence in pushing Freesync and multiple resolutions but it does zero good when you can't even pass the 3D audio formats back to the consumers audio system. That restriction is a joke, seriously. I'm not a happy customer. Yes to the two comments above! These are my exact frustrations. To have to choose between So because of this as I get ready to shop for a new TV for the Xbox Scarlett and Playstation 5 unless something changes you can be sure you have lost me and many many others to the rival OLED.

I wish I had been aware of this serious shortcoming when I bought a new Q80R last week. Sign In. Turn on suggestions. Auto-suggest helps you quickly narrow down your search results by suggesting possible matches as you type. Showing results for.

Related content.I purchased a QLED about 6 months back and am super impressed by everything that Samsung has done with these TVs, from the OS to the Picture Quality and the impressive ability to change device sources and control said devices using a single remote.

Started shopping for for another TV for the main viewing room and was excited to hear that the models would support HDMI 2. After doing my homework I found to my dissapointment that Samsung choose to exclude eARC from the models. I'd like to state loud and clear to any Samsung folks out there reading this: I'm going with an LG OLED instead since they choose to embrace and support new technology, the tipping point for my decision plain and simple was the exclusion of eARC.

Go to Solution. View solution in original post. One of my favorite AVR manufacturers released firmware for and up models to add earc to their equipment. Sure hope Samsung treats us as good. I just bought a 82" QR and was told by the Samsung sales rep that an eARC firmware update is coming this year, very soon. Why has this not happened yet?

I am disappointed. I kept thinking the reason I am not getting uncompressed audio was due to the Ethernet cables. Imagine my surprise when I replaced the cables and found that they did nothing to improve the sound.

Reading more on the subject, it appears Samsung has no plan to provide a firmware update. It appears I paid a lot but did not get what I wanted. Same here. Bought the q90r soundbar and now the qe55q90 just to discover that there is no earc and people have lipsync problems?

Plus reading through the forum and samsung is not answering properly and giving fake update promisses?! This is exactly my problem. So I'm connecting everything to my receiver and not getting Freesync in favor of 5.

This might suggest the hardware is still 2. I emailed Samsung and they confirmed no earc update is planned for the Q70r. Kind of sucks. Now that's no dolby vision, no 2. Samsung need to up their game and support if they are gonna stay as relevant. No dolby vision is already a big problem, no decent firmware updates meant this will be my last Samsung tv unless they seriously step it up.

Well I knew it never had dolby vision. I'm ok with that. But not being an expert on tv technology I assumed it would have the latest hdmi technology. It's true I shouldn't have assumed.

It's a good tv, but my next tv will probably be Sony or LG. Probably LG. Lesson learnt. ZicoUK said:. HDMI 2. The Q70R will do the following: p 60 Hz p Hz native support p 60 Hz native support p Hz native support 4k 60 Hz 4k 60 Hz I wouldn't expect many XSX games to be pulling 4k Hz anytime soon after release. Microsoft and the developers and Sony will more than likely be focusing on 4k 60Hz FPS as the standard entry target.Rather, ARC stands for audio return channel, a little-understood protocol that started showing up on HDMI-equipped devices a few years ago before evolving into a now-ubiquitous standard.

The technology is incredibly useful and has the potential to significantly simplify your entertainment system in myriad ways, starting with controlling all your audio from one remote. If CES was any indication, the latter tech will be more popular than ever, as most serious pieces of hardware prioritize its inclusion. HDMI has been around since Chances are you use it now, but you may not know how versatile it is. The system was created as a faster, more efficient way to deliver high-quality digital video and audio to and from consumer electronic devices.

A constantly evolving format, starting at the p-capable HDMI 1. The latest iteration, HDMI 2. With HDMI 2.

That equates to faster and more efficient transmission to keep up with the monstrous amount of bandwidth that video and audio of the future will require — right up to a whopping 48Gbps. The HDMI 2. Back to the present day: Many people currently use HDMI strictly as a means for connecting their cable boxes, Blu-ray players, and game consoles to their TV, but that little cable connection can do so much more.

CEC lets a single remote control operate features on up to 15 connected devices. ARC can help. Simplicity is the name of the game here.

More on that below. You may find similar results with other components as well, including Blu-ray players and set-top boxes. Your exact level of functionality largely depends on each individual piece of this convenience puzzle. Not all TVs, disc players, media boxes, and audio systems interact with each other in exactly the same way.

As a general rule of thumb, matching brands should give you the best overall experience, and those going the heterogeneous route will want to search for any potential compatibility issues before making all the necessary purchases.

Why is that necessary? Convenience and sound quality. In the past, this would have required that you connect another cable like an optical digital audio cable to link your TV with your receiver.

If you think that sounds great, just wait for eARC trickle down from top-of-the-range flagship TVs to the mainstream budget sector. You will be able to get the very best surround sound to any of your audio devices with no compromise.

Today, many TVs dumb down and compress audio signals before passing them through an HDMI cable, while others do support more channels and even Dolby Atmos, albeit using a more compressed codec like Dolby Digital Plus instead of Dolby TrueHD, which requires too much bandwidth.

With eARC, the original, full-resolution audio signal can be sent via the HDMI cable — again, producing the very best sound with no compromises.

With eARC, that connection just gets better, with no degradation of the audio signal imposed by your TV. Ever had trouble with lip-sync problems? Those are issues of the past with eARC. In theory, this new protocol also means manufacturers could create a new wave of audio-only receivers, soundbars, and amplifiers, as your TV would be able to handle the video signal, while still allowing for the highest-quality audio to make its way to your sound system. This could significantly reduce the cost of all kinds of home theater components.

With that in mind, we must point out that new technology takes time to become widely available. HDMI 2. Like all technologies, the future of home theater is announced and planned long before it becomes the standard.
