This tool is part of the samba 7 suite. It offers an interface similar to that of the ftp program see ftp 1. Operations include things like getting files from the server to the local machine, putting files from the local machine to the server, retrieving directory information from the server and so on. The server name is looked up according to either the -R parameter to smbclient or using the name resolve order parameter in the smb. The password required to access the specified service on the specified server.

If this parameter is supplied, the -N option suppress password prompt is assumed. There is no default password. If no password is supplied on the command line either by using this parameter or adding a password to the -U option see below and the -N option is not specified, the client will prompt for a password, even if the desired service does not require one.

Lowercase or mixed case passwords may be rejected by these servers. This option is used by the programs in the Samba suite to determine what naming services and in what order to resolve host names to IP addresses.

The option takes a space-separated string of different name resolution options. The options are :"lmhosts", "host", "wins" and "bcast". They cause names to be resolved as follows:. If the line in lmhosts has no name type attached to the NetBIOS name see the lmhosts 5 for details then any name type matches for lookup.

Note that this method is only used if the NetBIOS name type being queried is the 0x20 server name type, otherwise it is ignored. If no WINS server has been specified this method will be ignored. This is the least reliable of the name resolution methods as it depends on the target host being on a locally connected subnet.

If this parameter is not set then the name resolve order defined in the smb. The default order is lmhosts, host, wins, bcast and without this parameter or any entry in the name resolve order parameter of the smb. This options allows you to send messages, using the "WinPopup" protocol, to another computer.

If the receiving computer is running WinPopup the user will receive the message and probably a beep. If they are not running WinPopup the message will be lost, and no error message will occur. The message is also automatically truncated if the message is over bytes, as this is the limit of the protocol. One useful trick is to pipe the message through smbclient. See the message command parameter in the smb.

This number is the TCP port number that will be used when making connections to the server. This parameter provides combined with -L easy parseable output that allows processing with utilities such as grep and cut. This allows the user to select the highest SMB protocol level that smbclient will use to connect to the server.

Note that to connect to a Windows server with encrypted transport selecting a max-protocol of SMB3 is required. IP address is the address of the server to connect to. It should be specified in standard "a. Using this parameter will force the client to assume that the server is on the machine with the specified IP address and the NetBIOS name component of the resource being connected to will be ignored. There is no default for this parameter.By using our site, you acknowledge that you have read and understand our Cookie PolicyPrivacy Policyand our Terms of Service.

SMB troubleshooting can be extremely complex. This article is not an exhaustive troubleshooting guide Instead, it is a short primer to understand the basics of how to effectively troubleshoot SMB. One key aspect of quality SMB troubleshooting is communicating the correct terminology. Therefore, this article introduces basic SMB terminology to ensure accuracy of data collection and analysis. Before you troubleshoot SMB issues, we recommend that you first collect a network trace on both the client and server sides.

The following guidelines apply:. On Windows systems, you can use netshell netshNetwork Monitor, Message Analyser, or Wireshark to collect a network trace. A Netsh trace creates an ETL file. Then, run the following command:. You should trace only a minimum amount of the data that's transferred. For performance issues, always take both a good and bad trace, if the situation allows it. The TCP three-way handshake does not finish. This typically indicates that there is a firewall block, or that the Server service is not running.

Retransmits are occurring. These can cause slow file transfers because of compound TCP congestion throttling. Five retransmits followed by a TCP reset could mean that the connection between systems was lost, or that one of the SMB services crashed or stopped responding. The TCP receive window is diminishing. This can be caused by slow storage or some other issue that prevents data from being retrieved from the Ancillary Function Driver AFD Winsock buffer.

Many SMB errors are benign not harmful. Refer to the following information to determine why SMB returned the error before you conclude that the error is related to any of the following issues:.This article describes information about Windows disabling guest access in SMB2 by default, and provides settings to enable insecure guest logons in Group Policy. However, this is generally not recommended.

If you try to connect to devices that request credentials of a guest instead of appropriate authenticated principals, you may receive the following error message:. You can't access this shared folder because your organization's security policies block unauthenticated guest access.

These policies help protect your PC from unsafe or malicious devices on the network. User name: Ned Server name: ServerName. This event indicates that the server tried to log on the user as an unauthenticated guest but was denied by the client. Guest logons do not support standard security features such as signing and encryption.

Therefore, guest logons are vulnerable to man-in-the-middle attacks that can expose sensitive data on the network.

Windows disables insecure nonsecure guest logons by default. This event indicates that an administrator has enabled insecure guest logons. An insecure guest logon occurs when a server logs on the user as an unauthenticated guest. Therefore, allowing guest logons makes the client vulnerable to man-in-the-middle attacks that can expose sensitive data on the network. Windows disables insecure guest logons by default. If a remote device is configured to use guest credentials, an administrator should disable guest access to that remote device and configure correct authentication and authorization.

Microsoft-provided operating systems do not.

This setting has no effect on SMB1 behavior. SMB1 continues to use guest access and guest fallback. For more information, see SMBv1 is not installed by default in Windows 10 versionWindows Server version and later versions.

SMBv2 has the following behavior in these versions of Windows: Windows 10 Enterprise and Windows 10 Education no longer allow a user to connect to a remote share by using guest credentials by default, even if the remote server requests guest credentials.

Windows Server Datacenter and Standard editions no longer allow a user to connect to a remote share by using guest credentials by default, even if the remote server requests guest credentials.

Windows 10 Home and Professional editions are unchanged from their previous default behavior.
